Day 12 to the Southpole

Here’s a natural English translation that keeps the tone, humor, and drama of the original:

Today is a sad day. One that will be marked in my calendar for the rest of my life. It started off okay, though very windy outside. We began walking, and after two hours on the move we stopped so I could pee. In the strong wind, I carefully unscrewed my pee bottle, and in a split second the pee funnel slipped out of the bottle and was snatched by the wind. Within one second it was already gone, far away. I tried to throw myself after it and started running, only to quickly discover that the sled was still attached to me, pulling me sharply back. I shouted frantically for Mom, who was busy with unimportant things, before she also took off running. After a lot of fumbling I managed to free myself from the sled and set off with the wind. But my beloved “tussetut,” as we called it, was already far, far away.

It became a sorrowful evening. In my opinion, it’s top 3 worst things you can lose — right after the tent and the skis. I can no longer stand and pee, and must now crouch in the cold; it feels like a defeat.

RIP dear pee funnl! Since your final day has come, we will remember some of your great adventures:

  • Expedition Amundsen 2019

  • Svalbard 2019

  • Expedition Amundsen 2020

  • countless crossings of Hardangervidda

  • the Northwest Passage

  • and finally, your last days in Antarctica

We mourn in the tent today 💔

We are two peas in a pod who love adventure and a real challenge. We live by the belief that it becomes what you make of it, and fun is just around the corner if you look for it.
